The antennae is connected to the receiver by a coaxial cable. The antennae is used to determine the specific direction of the radio signal being produced by the transmitter as indicated by the receiver.

The receiver is used to detect the signal that is emitted by the Personal Locator Unit. There are currently three receiver models in use by Project Lifesaver:

1. The Osprey HR-2600, maufactured by Locator Systems
2. The LSI-G2, also manufactured by Locator Systems, and
3. The PLI-3000, manufactured by Communications Specialists.

Project Lifesaver-trained Electronic Search Specialists use RF-Gain in order to determine the precise physical location of the Personal Locator Unit.

Project Lifesaver utilizes radio direction finding in order to locate missing loved ones. A transmitter is worn on the wrist (in most cases) of Project Lifesaver clients. The transmitter emits a radio frequency signal / pulse once every second. The signal itself is not audible and can only be detected by a receiver.

The transmitter is powered by a battery that is changed by volunteers every 30 days. Caregivers are provided with a battery tester and are required to manually test the battery daily. This is easily accomplished by placing the tester against the Personal Locator Unit (transmitter). An operational battery will be indicated by a flashing red light.
